My husband and I recently tried the 1919 cocktail while we were in Boston for the marathon. The mixture of rye and rum creates a spicy and rich drink. We have been making this cocktail with Bullet Rye and Mount Gay XO, which has a strong barrel-aged flavor. A stronger Rye and a less oaky Rum would give this cocktail more varied flavor (other recipes recommend Rittenhouse Rye and Old Monk Rum). We were also happy to find another use for the mole bitters that we use in our McKittrick Old Fashioneds!
3/4 oz Rye
3/4 oz Rum
1 oz Punt e Mes
1/2 oz Benedictine
1 dash Bittermen’s Xocolatl Mole Bitters
This is a well balanced cocktail with my favorite ingredients— a nice change of pace for devoted Manhattan drinkers like me!
